Project Overview
The Javits Center rooftop event venue in New York City combines an enclosed glass pavilion with an expansive outdoor terrace overlooking the surrounding cityscape. The venue uses the pavilion and terrace as complementary event spaces, creating an indoor-outdoor environment on the roof of one of New York City’s major convention facilities.
The project called for a large operable opening between the pavilion and rooftop terrace that could connect the two event areas while preserving the views, usable space, and transparent architectural character of the glass-enclosed pavilion.
The Challenge
Connecting the enclosed pavilion with the rooftop terrace required an operable glazed opening more than 40 feet wide and 16 feet tall. A conventional opening configuration could have introduced tracks, operating equipment, or door movement into space needed for events and guest circulation.
The project therefore required a system capable of moving and storing a large glazed assembly at the opening while preserving usable space below it. When closed, the system also needed to maintain the transparent character of the pavilion and its visual connection to the surrounding rooftop environment.
The Solution
Renlita engineered a custom Fold vertical opening system (formerly the S-3000 Foldaway) for the Javits Center rooftop pavilion. The motorized counterweight system spans a 40’-4 3/4” wide by 16’-9 3/4” tall opening and incorporates 1-1/8” insulated glass with a Low-E coating across the glazed assembly.
The Fold uses hinged panels that move vertically and fold together as the system opens, storing the raised assembly above the opening rather than extending into the pavilion or terrace at floor level. This configuration creates a broad connection between the two event spaces while keeping the area beneath the raised system available for circulation and event use.
When closed, the insulated glazed assembly maintains visibility between the pavilion and surrounding rooftop environment. When raised, the Fold removes the physical separation across the approximately 40-foot-wide opening, allowing the pavilion and terrace to function as a more continuous event environment.

The Fold allows the Javits Center pavilion and rooftop terrace to function as separate spaces when the system is closed or as a more connected event environment when it is open. The 40’-4 3/4”-wide opening gives venue operators flexibility to adjust circulation and the relationship between indoor and outdoor areas for different event configurations.
40-Foot Clear Opening
The Fold spans a 40’-4 3/4” wide by 16’-9 3/4” tall opening between the glass pavilion and rooftop terrace. Its hinged panels fold and store above the opening when raised, preserving the floor area below for guests and event circulation rather than requiring door panels or operating tracks within the occupied space.
Glazing, Views & Natural Light
The Fold incorporates 1-1/8” insulated glass with a Low-E coating across the large operable assembly. When closed, the glazing maintains views through the opening and allows natural light into the pavilion while providing an enclosed separation from the rooftop terrace. When open, the stored panels expose the full connection between the indoor and outdoor event areas.
