Project Overview
While designing their new custom home in Denison, Texas, the homeowners envisioned an outdoor living space centered around their covered patio, grilling area, and pool. Because the family regularly hosts outdoor gatherings, they wanted a convenient connection between the kitchen and patio for moving food, drinks, and grilling supplies between the two spaces.
The original design called for a glass sectional garage door between the kitchen and outdoor living area. The homeowners ultimately chose a Renlita Flex gas-strut window because its single-panel, outward-opening design provided the kitchen pass-through they wanted without bringing sectional door tracks and overhead hardware into the finished interior.
The Challenge
A glass sectional garage door can create a broad indoor-outdoor opening, but its tracks, sectional panels, and overhead operating path did not fit the homeowners’ goals for this finished kitchen. They wanted to preserve the ceiling area and keep the kitchen counter available as a continuous serving surface.
The project therefore required an alternative that could create a functional pass-through between the kitchen and covered patio without sacrificing counter space or introducing sectional door tracks into the room. The opening also needed to provide convenient access to the grilling area and pool during outdoor gatherings.
The Solution
Bryan Beaver of Bradshaw Beaver Builders introduced the homeowners to the Renlita Flex as an alternative to the glass sectional garage door originally planned for the kitchen. The Flex uses a single panel that swings outward and upward with manual gas-strut-assisted operation, eliminating the need for sectional panels and tracks extending across the interior ceiling.
The 5’-wide by 3’-6”-tall Flex was installed between the kitchen and covered patio facing the home’s grilling area and pool. The Coastal White system incorporates 1/2” insulated glass with a Low-E coating and opens above the exterior side of the serving counter.
When raised, the Flex leaves the counter below clear for passing food, drinks, and grilling supplies between the kitchen and patio. When closed, the system functions as a glazed exterior window while the counter remains continuous because the Flex does not require a bottom track across the serving surface.

Direct Kitchen-to-Patio Connection
The Flex creates a direct pass-through between the kitchen and the covered patio, grilling area, and pool. Because the 5’-wide panel opens above the serving counter, food, drinks, and grilling supplies can move directly between the indoor kitchen and outdoor living area without requiring repeated trips through the house.
Easier Outdoor Entertaining
The kitchen pass-through allows refrigerated food, drinks, serving pieces, and grilling tools to remain inside until they are needed outdoors. Someone preparing food in the kitchen can pass items directly through the Flex to a person at the grill or pool area, reducing unnecessary foot traffic through the home while keeping the kitchen connected to outdoor gatherings.
Track-Free Kitchen Integration
Unlike the glass sectional garage door originally considered for the opening, the Flex uses a single outward-opening panel and does not require sectional door tracks extending across the kitchen ceiling. It also closes directly to the counter without a bottom track across the serving surface. This allows the kitchen to retain a clear ceiling and continuous counter while still providing a 5’-wide operable connection to the covered patio.
