Project Overview

Surrounded by the wooded landscape of Daniels, West Virginia, this residence was designed to make the main living area feel connected to its surroundings from nearly every direction. Five Renlita Wave systems span three walls of the living and dining space, creating expansive glazed elevations that provide panoramic views while giving the homeowners the ability to open much of the room’s perimeter to the outdoors.

The Challenge

The design called for more than large windows or a single opening to the exterior. The goal was to create a living space that could maintain broad views of the surrounding landscape while enclosed, then transition into a dramatically more open environment when desired. With openings planned across three walls, the systems also needed to provide weather protection, thermal performance and everyday functionality without competing with the architecture of the room.

The Solution

Five Renlita Wave systems were incorporated throughout the living space. Each two-panel vertical opening uses motorized linear actuators to lift the hinged panels outward and upward, folding them together as the opening clears. The doors feature 1-inch insulated LowE glass, full perimeter weather seals, solid aluminum thresholds and white powder-coated aluminum framing. Touchscreen wall controls provide push-button operation, while custom black motorized insect screens allow the homeowners to enjoy the open-air environment with added protection from insects.

Key Benefits

Panoramic Views from Multiple Directions

With five Wave systems distributed across three walls, the living and dining areas maintain views of the surrounding landscape from multiple directions. Large insulated glass panels help bring the wooded setting into the interior, allowing the scenery to remain a defining part of the room even when the doors are closed.

Open-Air Living with Added Comfort

When the Wave systems are raised, three sides of the living area can open to the outdoors. Custom motorized insect screens provide an additional layer of usability, allowing fresh air and expansive openings while helping keep insects outside. Full perimeter weather seals and insulated LowE glass support a more protected interior when the doors are closed.

Push-Button Transformation

Touchscreen wall controls make it easy to operate the five Wave systems and transform the room from an enclosed living space into a substantially more open gathering area. Rather than serving as individual doors alone, the systems work together to change how the entire room connects with the surrounding property.
